What we do not understand is why Twitter does not adopt an ad policy whereby each Twitter tweet has a content-based ad attached to it - or is this not possible with current technology?
We have the same problem with Wikipedia. You have to pay the bills. So, allow ads. Who cares.
Ads for products are a part of modern commerce. Modern life would be very different without advertising. How else would we find out what is going on in the world of goods and services, which we all enjoy?

Hummingbird 2 Client for Twitter
Hummingbird 2 Client for Twitter is a desktop manager for Twitter that can manage multiple accounts, keyword target tweeps to follow, has spam filters, advanced grading and scoring, reporting, and automated follow and unfollow functions.
For us one main aspect of Twitter is tha fact that most followers are followed - to the degree practicable - indeed, this is good Karma at Twitter.
Since the number of people that one can follow is a strong practical limitation, there is in most cases little value in following a lot of participants who do not follow you, although there will always be institutional and similar sites that we follow without ourselves being followed by those sites.
Automated programs such as Hummingbird 2 allow you to unfollow people who are not reciprocating. In most cases, they can be replaced by people who DO reciprocate, and produce similar, valuable content. There is little value in following non-reciprocating tweeps who are producing nothing better than what can be read easily elsewhere online. To find out who the non-reciprocators are is difficult with Twitter alone, and a program that can do this automatically can be valuable.
There are of course competitors here, especially TwitterAdder and Birdfeeder.
See all three reviewed at Twitter Software Reviews.

Wired's Steven Levy Asks: How will Twitter grow up?
At wired.co.uk, Steven Levy, in the online version of an article from the December printed issue of Wired UK magazine, asks:
How will Twitter grow up?
What is remarkable and what Levy particularly emphasizes is that the application of Twitter to real life has been greatly formed by the users, who did not limit themselves to the original Twitter question of "what are you doing today", but have taken Twitter to a new dimension, such that Facebook, Google and everyone else are falling all over themselves to integrate Twitter with their own services.
For those of you trying to figure out Twitter and wondering whether it will last, consider that Twitter at its foundation is real-time "headline" information - to or from - anyone, anywhere on the globe, and YOU decide who your information partners are. You can't beat that.
